Read President Obama's statement on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of this historic legislation.  For more information about the IDEA visit the website of the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education & Rehabilitative Services and watch the video, Celebrating 35 Years of IDEA.

Before the IDEA, many children were actually denied access to education and opportunities to learn. In 1970, U.S. schools educated only one in five children with disabilities, and many states had laws excluding certain students, including children who were deaf, blind, or had intellectual or other developmental disabilities.
